Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park is the centre of Riverway which draws members of the community, visitors and tourists with fantastic facilites. It would have to be one of Queensland’s most spectacular river settings. Activities include sports, entertainment, swimming, performing arts, visual arts, dining, shopping and passive recreation.

Pioneer Park is connected directly to the Thuringowa central business district with both Willows Shoppingtown and Sunland Plaza shopping centres being within short walking distances away. Alternatively there is plenty of onsite parking (except for large events) in which you can take advantage of the public transport including the Sunbus service or Townsville Taxi services.

The two major public building/landscape components that form Pioneer Park is the Riverway Arts Centre and lagoon precinct, and the Riverway Sports Centre 'Tony Ireland Stadium' which hosts national level sporting competitions, including Australian Football League (AFL) and Cricket. The stadium will also play host a variety of community events and sports. Other components that form Pioneer Park include restaurants, cafes, bars, specialty shops and local businesses.

Loam Island

Loam Island runs close to the Thuringowa mainland and is about 1.5km long and has been included in the development of Riverway.

The development of the island involved dredging the creek to reinstate the island, a program of weed and river algae removal, and the completition of three distinct precincts, including the first precinct which is community focused. Considering Loam Island is a highly active recreational area, this precinct comprises a multi-purpose building and open spaces for use by local Scouts, Guides, the Riverway Rowing Club and the Townsville Water Ski Club. The facility is located at one end of a possible 2000m international standard rowing course.

Because of predicted flood levels the building has been located above Loam Island in an area providing ideal viewing for the Rowing Club and Scouts/Guides Halls.

Future Pricincts

Development of the second precinct will see the upgrade of savannah grassland Expansion of the creek edge to form an adventure archipelago comprising pools and interactive artwork to stimulate children’s minds concerning the river ecology.

The final precinct will serve as a conserved environmental wetland with boardwalks and interpretation nodes informing visitors of the delicate nature and diversity of marine wetland environments.

The ultimate goal of the three precincts is to hopefully inform future generations on how to responsibly manage and care for the river system, balancing human interaction with preserved riverine biodiversity.
